How to Market with Memes

Written by Emily Topham, Internet Marketing Intern on March 10, 2015

Over the past few years, memes have evolved from pictures with captions to gifs, videos and even ideas. The expansion of the Internet has enabled users to connect through these mediums on a deeper level. Social media marketing has become so much more than creating a Facebook page for your business. Memes share big ideas that are intuned with the current culture. When companies join in on the latest meme fads, people are more likely to listen.

Memes are infectious. With the right amount of truth and humor, a meme can become very catchy. The great thing about memes is that a younger audience can relate to them. Memes that effectively express a common feeling bring a comradery between your business and the viewers.

When incorporating memes, it can be a hit or miss situation, and a miss can greatly damage your company’s publicity. Be sure that if you are using a common meme, you are using it in the correct context.

Make it Relevant

Pick memes that relate to your company. It is so important to understand what idea a meme is expressing and where it came from. If you use an irrelevant meme, the side effects can be deadly. When choosing what meme to emulate, it’s important to look for memes that are popular and entertaining. Having a sense of humor can really draw in customers. You don’t even have to create you own memes. Use ones that fit your message.

Make it Quickly

With memes, it is very common for popularity to fluctuate. The shelf life of a meme depends entirely on the public. They choose the “when” and “what” of meme trends. You can learn to sense how long a meme will be in style by keeping up with social media. Once you select the perfect, current meme, be sure to add your twist to it on time. Using a meme to market your company when a meme is fading out of style will be more harmful than helpful.

Make it Memorable

Memes are usually designed to be alterable, which can be both a blessing and a curse. Using memes for marketing is a very popular method of advertising. All the big companies are doing it. With all these memes and meme replicas out there, it’s important to make yours stand out. Make it witty and unique enough to remind the viewers of your business. With these tricks and tips, you can bring a hip, new clientele to your company and leave a lasting impression.

With all that being said, I will leave you with this, because it is sometimes really hard to explain what a meme is.
