The Escalator of Social Media Marketing
Have you ever walked up a downward-moving escalator? It’s not the same as going up a regular staircase. You have to put a lot more effort into it and you can never stop moving forward. If you stop moving, stop taking those steps forward, then the escalator will gradually take you down to the bottom. All you had to do was stop stepping forward. Ever feel this way in your social media marketing? Ever feel that you are stepping against a current that wants to pull you down? Well if you are not careful, you will end up at the bottom. What steps can be taken to avoid ending at the bottom?
Sounds simple, right? Well……it is, at least this part. You just need to keep moving one foot in front of the other. Never stop moving, “keep on keeping on,” as they say. One problem though. If you are just taking one step up after the other on a downward escalator you will stay in the same spot. So you won’t be at the bottom, but you will be stationary. So how does one progress?
Increase the pace.
A great way to get to a location quicker is to increase the pace. You need to be more active on your social media sites and not be a passive observer. Start posting and interacting more. Start becoming a presence rather than a stationary observer.
Take larger steps.
Time to stop taking those baby steps and start walking with the big boys; this is a little bit harder than increasing you pace. You need to start using new materials and sending your message out through new and all channels. Be willing to try something new. With larger steps, you also need to be willing to take risks. You need to be willing to fall and fail from time to time. As said in the awesome movie, “Batman: Begins”-
“Why do we fall Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.”
We learn from our mistakes and then make improvements upon our tactics and plans for the future. By taking risks, you push yourself harder to succeed.
Leaps and Bounds.
If you are willing to take some larger steps, then it’s time to start leaping up several steps at a time. These leaps and bounds come from creating new and exciting content and then jumping ahead with it. Once you have something you feel you audience will love, then start jumping forward. The people who are bounding forward are the people that have something new and exciting to share. Creating content can be a difficult process, but so is learning to jump after you have learned to walk. I never said it would be easy, but it will definitely be worth it in the end when you have reached the top of the social media marketing escalator.
After all the effort that comes from pushing yourself to create something new, you can look down that escalator and see the steps that have been taken to get to the top. But your job isn’t done once you’ve reached the top. Now, you need to look down and reach out your hand to help those in need. Share your knowledge and insight on how you made it to the top. Tell them you know how they feel, all the scrapes and bruises from falling down, the strain from leaping the steps. Encourage them to keep pressing forward. In the end, after all the work, they too can look down and lend a helping hand.
