I was sitting with my family one morning having breakfast. I told my wife about a weird dream I had the previous evening. When I finished my 5 year old son decided he wanted to tell us about his dream as well. For the next 20 minutes he proceeded to tell us of his dream in extreme detail. We sat there enjoying the story he was weaving before us. It had ghosts, monsters, Jedis, spiders, and people being eaten. This dream was obviously made up, but hey when’s the last time you made up a 20 minute story without missing a beat? Where did all those creative juices go? We have become so
concerned about what people think and say about us, that we no longer put ourselves out there with our crazy ideas.
Have we lost our creativity in Social Media Marketing?
Studies show that you are most creative at 5 years old. Why? There are many theories about this, but I think it’s because we as parents and mentors don’t allow creativity to continue to bloom by giving tasks that must be done one specific way. Do we as companies/employers give our employees tasks and expect them to never deviate from the path? Don’t get me wrong, tasks are great and sometimes we do need to stay on the path. However if we never leave the path, then you may never see or find that special place, a place where some fantastic things are waiting to be found.
So how do you know when you see creativity? “Creativity is kind of like pornography — you know it when you see it,” said Rex Jung, a research scientist at the Mind Research Network in Albuquerque.
What can you do to be creative?
Look at what is being done by others in your field and get inspiration from them. You can adapt what they are doing to get you started. After this you may be able to be inspired by other things in your life. Look to the things you love to do in your life and receive inspiration from that. I love video games; I look at what is being done in the gaming world and see how I can apply it to Social Media. People love to see different viewpoints and how you explain them. Look around and be inspired by the things you love in the world.
You won’t get very far if you’re never willing to take a leap of faith from time to time. Sometimes you might have an idea to apply to your marketing plan but afraid on the implications it might have. It’s good to be a little afraid or cautious so that you make good judgments, but sometimes you need to buck up and go for it. Some things would never be accomplished if weren’t daring to do it.
In the great words of Yoda, “Do or do not, there is no try.”
So look to be inspired, be daring to look fear in the face, and then DO it.
