What is AI referral traffic?

AI referral traffic usually refers to website visits from links in standalone AI assistants and AI search tools, which GA4 now groups into an AI Assistant channel for recognized tools. Visits from AI features within a search engine can instead be classified as Organic Search, so define which products and sources your report includes.

How to find AI referral traffic

In Google Analytics 4, check the built-in AI Assistant channel in your Default Channel Group reports, which groups visits from recognized assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. For tools GA4 doesn't recognize yet, filter session source for their domains and add them to a custom channel group.

Some visits arrive without referrer information and land in direct traffic, so your count will usually be lower than the real number.

What to do with the data

Look at which pages receive AI visits, and compare their engagement and conversion rates with your other channels. Those pages show the questions where AI tools already treat you as a source.

Volume may be small compared with organic search, so judge it by the quality of visits as well as the count.

Common questions

Why is my AI referral traffic so low?

Many AI answers are read without a click, and some tools don't pass referrer data. Low numbers can reflect user behavior and tracking limits as well as your visibility.

Is AI referral traffic the same as organic traffic?

Not always a separate category. GA4 now reports visits from recognized AI assistants in its own AI Assistant channel, while visits from AI features within search engines, such as AI Overviews, are usually reported as Organic Search. Define the scope of your AI traffic report before comparing channels.

Can I add UTM parameters to track AI traffic?

You don't control the links an AI tool shows, so you can't tag them yourself. Some tools add their own tracking parameters, which you may see in your reports.

Does AI referral traffic convert well?

It varies by site and audience, so check your own data. Compare conversion rates against your other channels rather than assuming a result.
