What is automated bidding?

Automated bidding lets an ad platform set or adjust bids toward a chosen goal, such as clicks, visibility, conversions, or conversion value. Google's conversion-focused Smart Bidding is an auction-time subset; not every automated strategy uses that same approach.

How automated bidding works

You choose a goal and a suitable strategy. Google Ads examples include Maximize Clicks and Target Impression Share, as well as conversion-focused Smart Bidding strategies. Smart Bidding adjusts bids at auction time using signals such as device, location, time, and audience.

This replaces much of the manual work of adjusting bids by keyword or segment. Your role shifts to setting goals, supplying good data, and checking results.

What it needs to work well

Conversion-focused strategies need accurate conversion tracking and, for value goals, reliable conversion values. Click- and visibility-focused automation does not require conversion tracking to pursue its stated goal.

Conversion history can help conversion-focused strategies learn. Expect an adjustment period after starting or changing a strategy, and avoid frequent changes during it.

Where it can fall short

Automation follows the goal you give it, so a poorly chosen goal can produce poor results. Review results regularly and keep control of budget and targeting.

Common questions

Is automated bidding better than manual bidding?

Often it performs well when you have good conversion tracking and enough data. Manual bidding can still make sense for new accounts, low volume, or when you need tight control.

What is the difference between automated bidding and Smart Bidding?

Smart Bidding is the subset of Google Ads automated strategies that optimizes for conversions or conversion value at auction time. Other automated strategies, such as Maximize Clicks and Target Impression Share, pursue different goals and are not Smart Bidding.

How long does automated bidding take to learn?

It varies by platform and by how much conversion data you have. Expect a period of adjustment after launch or a major change, and judge results over a longer window than a few days.

Can I still control costs with automated bidding?

Yes. You can set budgets, and many strategies accept targets for cost or return. Those targets guide the system but are not a guarantee.
