What is duplicate content?

Duplicate content is substantially the same content appearing at more than one URL, on one site or across several. It can make it harder for search engines to pick the right page to show and can split link signals.

Why duplicate content is a problem

When several URLs carry the same content, search engines must choose one to show, and they may not choose the one you prefer. Links and other signals can end up divided between versions instead of strengthening a single page.

Google has said there is generally no penalty for ordinary duplicate content. The risk is wasted crawling, diluted signals, and the wrong version ranking.

Common causes

Typical causes include URL parameters, http and https versions, www and non-www versions, printer-friendly pages, and product pages that appear under several categories. Copied or syndicated text can also create duplicates across sites.

How to fix it

Use canonical tags to point to your preferred version, or redirect duplicates to it. Where possible, make each page's content genuinely distinct.

Common questions

Does duplicate content cause a Google penalty?

Not usually. Google has said that ordinary duplication isn't penalized. Content copied at scale to manipulate rankings can be treated as spam.

How do I find duplicate content?

SEO crawling tools can flag identical or near-identical pages on your site. Google Search Console may also report pages that Google chose not to index because they duplicate others.

Is syndicated content duplicate content?

Yes. If you want syndicated copies excluded from Google Search, ask partners to add a Googlebot noindex directive and leave those copies crawlable so Google can see the noindex. A source link credits the original but does not prevent indexing, and Google does not recommend canonicals as the solution for syndication partners.

What is the difference between duplicate content and thin content?

Duplicate content repeats text found elsewhere. Thin content offers little value to readers, whether or not it is copied.
