What is GTM?

GTM, or Google Tag Manager, is a free tool for adding and managing tracking tags on your website through one interface. Instead of editing site code for each tag, you install a single container and control what fires from within the tool.

How GTM works

GTM uses three main parts. Tags are the snippets that send data, triggers decide when a tag fires, and variables hold the values tags need.

You set these up in the GTM interface, preview them, and publish the changes when they work.

Why teams use it

Marketers can add or change tracking without waiting on a developer for every update. Version history lets you roll back mistakes, and preview mode helps you test before anything goes live.

GTM can also run on a server, which supports server-side tracking.

Keeping a container tidy

Name tags clearly, limit who can publish, and remove tags you no longer use. Too many tags slow your pages and make problems harder to find.

Common questions

Is Google Tag Manager free?

Yes, the standard version is free. Server-side hosting has its own infrastructure costs.

What's the difference between GTM and GA4?

GTM deploys tags and decides when they fire. GA4 is an analytics tool that receives and reports the data those tags send.

Do I need a developer to use GTM?

A developer usually installs the container once. After that, marketers can manage many tags, though complex tracking may need a data layer from a developer.

What is a GTM container?

A container is the bundle of tags, triggers, and variables for one site. You install a single container snippet on your pages.
